The Economic Research Institute, in cooperation with the Ministry of Mining and Heavy Industry, implemented the project "Capacity Building on the Natural Resource and Mining in Mongolia Project" with the support of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The book " Economic Dependence of Mongolia on Minerals " was prepared as a product of the research work carried out within the framework of this project.
This book discusses the policy issues of the development of Mongolia's mining sector and its economic and social impact in detail. Moreover, contracting, taxation, marketing and trading, the macroeconomic and social effects of the mining industry, and the role of foreign direct investment has been discussed, and proposals and policy recommendations have been developed. It also includes a multi-scenario analysis of budget revenue management and its effectiveness using the in-house Computable General Equilibrium Model. Furthermore, the book discusses the direct and indirect impacts of large-scale mining projects on the livelihoods of local households and the importance of obtaining a social license to operate.
